World Climate Day March 26th,

On March 26th of this year is celebrated the World Meteorological Day, this is an event that seeks to promote collective awareness about climate change framed within the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.

Of course, joins this commemoration highlighting the role of Information Technology (IT) in support of work methodologies that reduce the negative impact on the environment and therefore on climate change.

It is undeniable that the climate is changing, that the planet needs to continue advancing to technologies that help organizations to coexist with the environment so that they are increasingly productive and less negative towards natural resources.

Technologies that promote awareness of climate change

Halting the use of fossil fuels is not yet possible for mankind, and despite the deterioration of our environment, governments are slow to implement technological alternatives to help achieve the planet’s climate change goals.

So, how can we face this problem that concerns us all?, to answer this question there is no definitive magic formula, but what does exist are innovative alternatives that help reduce the impact and that lead us as a society to place ourselves in a much more appropriate place on the side of a future solution.

Currently, we can find the following five technologies that help slow the march of climate change:

Batteries for electric vehicles.

There are many advances in this area and of course this represents a breakthrough in the decarbonization of the transport sector in the long term.

Solar panels and wind turbines

Not all previous times were worse, these are technologies that have been with us for several decades, and the best thing about their use is that they do not generate greenhouse gases on the planet.

Carbon storage and sequestration

Underground CO2 sequestration is one of the measures that some biomass plants are beginning to implement, demonstrating that it is possible to continue generating energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Power to X

Through the use of electrolyzers to extract hydrogen from water, renewable energy can be stored. David Wortmann, who is a board member of the Energy Watch Group, a German NGO, says this is an excellent way to decarbonize the heating, mobility and chemical sectors.

Cloud platforms

Cloud technology is here to stay, there are many organizations that today provide storage and data management services remotely, allowing organizations and users to access all kinds of documents, information and other digital resources in real time and virtually unlimited, this has meant progress in time, costs and resource optimization.

Some organizations that remain at the forefront in this area and promote progress in this field with a view to a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly future are:

Through its “Sustainability in the Cloud” philosophy, Amazon Web Services (AWS) focuses on supplying its operations with 100% renewable energy.

Microsoft Azure

In its quest for a cleaner and greener future as described on its website, through the use of its digital ecosystem and the implementation of Azure proposes to organizations to control and reduce carbon emissions.

Google Cloud

By 2030, Google expects to supply all its processes with carbon-free energy uninterruptedly, as of the date of publication of this article they are registering carbon neutral emissions.

For IONOS, digital growth and a sustainable future go hand in hand. On their website they tell us how they are doing to keep their cloud hosting services climate-friendly.

Thanks to the use of green energy they manage to reduce the impact on the environment by CO2 emissions. In addition, they continuously work on making their data centers more efficient by integrating technologies and recycling systems that generate a supply chain that helps drive the industry towards conscious sustainability.

The next decade will be better for climate change

For some years now, many organizations have been carrying out studies and projects focused on the implementation of technologies that help reduce the impact on the environment and optimize organizational processes. Of course, the path to achieve progress in the direction of environmentally conscious sustainability must go through several changes in the way energy and inputs are obtained in order for industries to continue operating.

That is why the next decade will have a more conscious society, organizations much more contextualized with the needs of the markets and the environment, in turn, alternatives such as cloud systems that since its inception have been projected as one of the best options when moving towards a better future for all.

On March 26th of this year at 8:30 pm, the WWF invites you to take part in the Earth Hour activity, which consists of turning off the lights for one hour as a symbol of awareness of climate change. This is a practice that has been carried out since 2007.
